Dyed, Naturally

Hope you all had a nice weekend! My sister Laurel ended up making these beautiful naturally dyed eggs for Easter and I had to take a few pics. She used onion peel and beats for the coloring and garden herbs for the decorations. Definitetly bookmarking this idea for next year!

    Totally gorgeous!! I’m curious, did it have an onion smell? I would love to do this next year but have a serious aversion to the smell of raw onion. Thanks for sharing!

    So glad you all like these as much as I do! My sister made these by boiling the onion peels and beets to create the dyes. Then, to keep the herbs in place she wrapped each egg in nylon stockings then tied with rubber-bands. Once wrapped, place the eggs in the dye until desired color then simple unwrap and peel off the herb.

    As far as the sent, they actually don’t smell like much. Maybe a little “earthy” if anything but definitely not like onions so you’re safe 😉

    I have to say, I’m really impressed. I’m gone the easy, Whole Foods all-natural from veggies food dye route before, but haven’t had the nerve to do it myself. This is definitely inspiration.

    I did this with my parents when I was little. Actually, my mom still colors the eggs using onion peel (she collects it for days before Easter to make sure she has enough to get a dark color), and if she feels like taking the extra effort, she includes the leaves to add a design… So nice to see something so resonant of home here! : )

    Lovely! I will definitely have to try that nylon/herb technique next year. Another kitchen natural dye to try is turmeric. It makes a lovely deep mustardy color that really complements onion skin dye color.
