Curtain Trick!
September 19th, 2011A few weeks ago I was struggling to keep my curtains in place. Every time I opened a window the rings would slide or my sheers would shift. I ended up using mighty magnets to keep the rings in place and they’ve worked out brilliantly! Best part, they’re so little that you can place them towards the wall and you’ll never even know they’re there. It’s such a simple and easy fix so I thought I’d pass the tip along. Here’s to drapes that always stay in place!

From your pictures, I think you answered my question, but I’ll ask anyway… so for your double curtains, does it look ok that one curtain is directly on the rod and the other has clips? I realized I needed to use clips if I want to buy my own fabric for curtains (don’t know how to sew loops), but the sheers already have loops. I wasn’t sure it would look good, but from your pictures, it looks great! Do you have a wide shot of your windows? 🙂

Hi Nicole! Yes, that’s exactly right, I just the clips for the drapes and the sheers go directly over the rod. I don’t have a photo of the drapes from a distance but I’ll try to add one shortly. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it either but after see it all together I think it’s actually quite nice. I think if I had rings for the sheers as well it might be a bit too much hardware. Plus, it saves some money too! Good luck! Kathleen

very clever

this is such a clever idea, but sadly, it only works on metal rods! what about plastic/wooden rod users?! =\

Hi Linda, great question! I think wood rods could as easily use push pins on the back side. They’re discreet enough that I doubt they’d be noticed. Plastic on the other hand seems a little more tricky. I’d suggest tape but it seems fussy and might ruin your drapes. I’ll give it some thought and post any ideas if I think of something.
Best,Kathleen

Hi Kathleen,
I have only just discovered your blog through someone’s link..
but you will now be top on my list of daily reads!
anyone who is as obsessed as me as to how curtains stay open “just so” is tops in my book!!
I use a length of ribbon, matching or contrasting, tie it just tightly enough around the rod to hold position … but loose enough to still slide.
You made me feel better about myself and this little OCD thing I have!
Thanks! ~Jill

mighty magnets are ferociously strong. seriously the best. i literally have to lean into them to move them on the fridge. again, the best!

Magnets wouldn’t work for me, as I have wooden rods – so I’ve been using a wee stack of painter’s tape on the tippety top, just as you have with your magnet.
